Contemporary architecture in Milan
The neighborhood Porta Nuova in Milan that has been abandoned for 50 years is now one of Europe’s most interesting sites for contemporary architecture. The old business area has got new service buildings, luxury residential buildings and commercial and cultural spaces on a total area of about 350.000 square meters.
The project, created by Hines, is divided into three areas (Garibaldi, Varisine and Isola) with a large central park called “The tree library”.
Among the innovative buildings can be mentioned for example the “Vertical Forest”, that is completely inspired by sustainability and biodiversity instead of the technological aspects of most contemporary buildings. The project consists of two residential towers on which there are growing 900 trees. The choice of vegetation depends on the direction and floor plan and evergreens are alternated with deciduous trees, which makes the building change its appearance depending on the season. The building was awarded in 2014 with the prestigious International Highrise Award.
